Sports Injuries and Chiropractic Care

In athletics, sports injuries and chiropractic care go hand in hand because of the success athletes of all ages have when being treated by a chiropractor. With sports there is so much competition, from high school all the way to the professional level. Like anyone looking to refine and polish their craft, athletes are no different whether they need the best way to rehabilitate an injury, improve strength or flexibility or just improve their overall athletic performance. So I am going to share with you how chiropractic helps with sports injuries, the prevention of them and overall better athletic performance.

Sports performance and sports injuries are related simply for the fact that when an athlete is injured, their performance gets worse as does their body if not treated properly. They have now estimated that more than 30 million children and high school kids in the U.S. participate in sports and that growing number means a growing number of sports injuries. The number of sports injuries for youth and high school now exceeds infectious disease in kids. So as you can see this is a highly concentrated area that needs constant and proper attention.

This is where chiropractic can make a world of difference and has for athletes by helping them perform better. Most patients think of chiropractors as doctors that will help treat an initial or chronic injury in the present. However chiropractic does that and also prepares your body to perform better and prevent injury in the future as well. I am going to talk about how a chiropractor can improve athletic performance and I will also list many but not all of the successful athletes that use(d) chiropractors for this very reason. Many athletes are looking to increase their strength and power capacity in their respective sport. So, when it comes to understanding how an athlete can be effected, it is important to understand that the key component for your body to give it’s optimal strength and power output is to eliminate any interference with your nerves, joints and surrounding soft tissues. When these area are compromised, your performance will decline and will be more prone to injury. If your joints are out of place they will restrict your proper mechanics and R.O.M. (Range of Motion), as well as put pressure on your nerves. If your nerves have interference they cannot allow your muscles and joints to operate at their optimal functioning capacity, thus impeding peak athletic performance. As a chiropractor, we adjust the specific joints that are out of place and allow proper mechanics and R.O.M. (Range of Motion) to take place, while taking pressure off of the nerves allowing them to function at 100%.

This is why it is critical to make sure when playing sports, you get checked by your chiropractor for injuries or aches and pains and eliminate improper positioning of joints and soft tissues to allow you to perform at your best while also preventing injury down the road. As mentioned earlier here is a list of professional athletes that have used or still use a chiropractor to keep them at the top of their athletic peak: Michael Jordan, Dan Marino, Mary Lou Retton, Charles Barkley, Muhammad Ali, John Stockton, Tom Brady, Billy Jean King, Tiger Woods, Joe Montana, Wayne Gretzky, U.S. Women’s Soccer team, Dan O’Brien (Olympic Gold Medalist-Decathlon), Roger Federer, Jack Nicklaus, Scottie Pippen, Martina Navratilova, Johnny Damon, Jerry Rice, Evander Holyfield, Usain Bolt, Emmitt Smith, Misty May-Treanor (3x Olympic Gold Beach Volleyball), Aaron Rodgers, Phil Mickelson, Andy Murray, Sidney Crosby, Terrell Owens, Arnold Palmer, Novak Djokovic, Wade Boggs, James Harrison and Mike Modano.
