What Supplements Should I be Taking?

The age old question my patients all ask me at one point or another is “what supplements should I be taking?”

Well I’m glad you asked, because supplemental nutrition is one of the most important things you can do for your immediate and future health. Most people either do not take any supplements or they are taking the wrong ones (brand wise). So, I am going to talk about and explain to you which ones are essential to take every day and which brands I prefer.

In my opinion there are about 6 ESSENTIAL daily supplements everyone should be taking. So, I will go over all 6 and explain their benefits.

1.)    Multivitamin:  Which just like its name has a multitude of vitamins and minerals that your body needs to function at its optimal level and stay healthy. Most people cannot get all of the proper nutrients they need from their regular diet alone and that’s why this is an important everyday supplement to take for balanced health and to maintain healthy organ function.

2.)    B Complex vitamin: There are 8 B vitamins and they all play an important role in your body’s overall functions from creating energy for our cells, to providing oxygen to our organs. So, I will breakdown each one individually.

  • B1(Thiamine)- Helps the body make new healthy cells as well as proper function of the nerves, muscles and heart.
  • B2(Riboflavin)- It’s an antioxidant (fights free radicals) which helps prevent early aging as well as red blood cell production for oxygen transport.
  • B3(Niacin)- Helps boost your good cholesterol (HDL), which helps prevent arterial blockage that can lead to heart attack or stroke.
  • B5(Pantothenic acid)- This helps to breakdown carbs and fats for energy and produces hormones as well for normal growth and development.
  • B6(Pyridoxine)- Helps the body with mood and sleep patterns due to its production of serotonin, melatonin and norepinephrine. This B vitamin also helps breakdown proteins.
  • B7(Biotin)- Helps with healthy proper growth of the hair, skin and nails as well as being vital for normal growth of a baby during pregnancy.
  • B9(Folate)- Helps with memory loss and vital during pregnancy to prevent neurological birth defects.

This does not cover everything the B vitamins help with or help to prevent but clearly shows the vital importance of taking this supplement on a daily basis whether you are young or old.

3.)    Fish Oil: This supplement is another gold standard for overall health and wellness and helps with: prevention of cardiovascular disease, weight loss, boosts your immune system, depression, reduce arthritic pain and helps to prevent brain atrophy diseases like Alzheimer’s, just to name a few.

4.)    Chelates: They help to remove heavy metals from your body which you ingest daily from food, water, vaccines or even in the air you breathe. This is important because over time heavy metals in your body create a toxic environment and can cause headaches, dehydration, nausea and in very high amounts organ failure.

5.)    Adrenal Supplements: Your adrenal glands sit on top of your kidneys and they produce hormones like cortisol (which influences the metabolism of fats, proteins and sugars) and adrenaline (stress response, which increases blood pressure and heart rate during the fight or flight response). These are just a few hormones that are both vital and are produced by the adrenal glands. However, when we do not eat properly or stress out a lot (which most of us do), the glands get overused and burn out. 6.)    Co-Q10: Last but not least is a supplement your body constantly needs because of its energy properties. Since we are burning off energy all day long we need to constantly make more, well this enzyme (called Coenzyme Q10) helps generate 95% of your bodies overall energy. I would say that is pretty important and since you need ATP (energy for our cells) to function and live, that is why this supplement is on this list.
